Okay, I couldn’t wait to finally sit down and write my review of Modular Closets, because the experience was just oh-so-amazing and the product is fantastic.
So, I’ll jump right in.
A few weeks ago, my wife and I decided we’ll finally go ahead and do what we always dreamed of:
Buy our own custom closet system.
But we quickly ran into a problem…
Other Custom Closet Options
We thought we’d saved up enough but when we started looking into options and priced out two different companies, we realized that it’s way over budget.
And then on top of that, those companies required professional installation which would cost an extra few hundred dollars.
Oh, and wait…!
They both estimated that shipping would take 6-8 weeks. And that was bad because we wanted to get our closet built before the back to school season.
That’s when we went back to the drawing board and started looking at different options. And we found Modular Closets. And boy am I glad we did.
Just check out our finished product:
And by the way, I love my closet but I know it’s pretty simple. If you go to the Modular Closets online gallery, you’ll see tons of photos of stunning closets.

So, as you can see, there are many different ways you can build your closet with Modular Closets, as you’ll see below. So enough with the introductions!
Designing Your Modular Closet System
Let me start with the closet design process.
We hopped on to modularclosets.com and selected “Design Your Closet“:

Then we chose the option “I Want To Design My Own“:

This brought us to a really cool design software. It did take a minute to load but it’s worth the wait 🙂
We chose the option “Reach In” because that’s the type of closet space we have. But if you have a walk in closet (good for you!) or you need a design for a custom space, just go with the other options.

Then the tool prompted me to enter my closet dimensions. I assumed it would be prudent to get this part right so I went and measured each wall of my closet space.
I put the dimensions into the tool and hit “Create Closet”.

And now came the really cool part.
The tool created a 3D image of my space with a recommended configuration of closet modules:

I guess this would be the best place to explain what’s unique about Modular Closets.
Unlike other custom closet systems which are built from scratch based on your dimensions, Modular Closets developed a modular system, where you can plug and play different closet pieces, or modules as they call them. Much like pieces of a puzzle.
So if you look at the image above there are four modules (from left to right):
- A tall hanging module
- A Shelf Closet Tower With Drawers
- A Shelf Closet Tower Without Drawers
- A double hanging module
But you don’t have to stick to their recommendations. Just head over to the menu on the right and click on “Towers”:

This will allow you to select the module you want to replace and choose from their very cool library of modules:

We chose to just fill the second tower with drawers (because you can never have too much drawer space, right??) and add cubbies on the top right and a slanted shoe shelves on the bottom right.
You can get tons of cool accessories like that if you click on the “edit components” button:

The button on the bottom right allows you to choose your hardware finishes. We chose polished chrome.

Now’s the time to “Continue to Review” (the button on the bottom right).
This allows you to generate a PDF proposal of your design and any notes you might want to give to Modular Closets.
And when you’re ready just hit the “Add to Shopping Cart” button:

And just like that, it takes you to the shopping cart and you can check out!
It was really cool, easy and quick. I couldn’t believe it.
Now, I was able to figure out the closet design tool pretty easily, and I think you can too, but if you’re having trouble figuring it out, they have live support to walk you through the process.
Or, alternatively, you can fill out a form with your dimensions and they will create a design for you — for free!
Anyway, now we just had to wait for shipping.
The website promised 3-5 day shipping and it seriously right on target. It arrived four days after we placed the order.
The packaging was nice and attractive:

And the pieces came nicely packaged so that they don’t get damaged during shipping:

They smartly put the instruction manual on the back of the box and make it verrry noticeable!

Now, time to install!
Tools You’ll Need to Install Your Modular Closets
Thankfully, Modular Closets designed their system so that it should be easy to install. I say thankfully because I’m not a handy guy. Here are the tools you’ll need:
- Stud finder
- Leveler
- Drill
Follow the instructions in the manual (they’re very clear) and you’ll be fine.
If you run into any issues, they have live human support who can help you. They’re based in New Jersey so you’ll speak to Americans on this side of the planet without an automated system!

Conclusion
So, we had an awesome experience and we love our closet.
